Architectural Powder Coating

Using AAMA 2604 & AAMA 2605 Powder Coating Standards

Powder coating has many strengths that make it a solid choice for architectural finishing. It is rugged and durable even against harsh conditions, adds hardness and abrasion resistance, and helps protect and maintain the structural integrity of the metal against corrosion. It retains color and gloss well, and is available in a variety of colors and textures. Powder coating is also an eco-friendly process, with no VOC outgassing. At PowderTech, we use only environmentally safe chemical pretreatments.

PowderTech offers architectural spray coating for:

  • Architectural metalwork
  • Metal facades
  • Railings
  • Metal fencing
  • Window frames
  • Curtain walls
  • Light elements
  • Doors
  • Soffits
  • Fascia
  • Vents
  • Grills
  • Air exchangers
  • and more (let us know what you need!)

The powder coat industry has developed a wide range of high-performance powders that meet the demands of architectural finishing. There are numerous powder coat options available that meet AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 requirements.

AAMA 2604

Formulated with super durable or modified polyester resins, AAMA 2604 exterior finishes offer good color and gloss retention for approximately 5 years of exposure. They also provide good hardness and abrasion resistance. AAMA 2604 powder coating is often used for high-traffic installations like doors and storefronts, as well as lite commercial applications.

AAMA 2605

AAMA 2605 finishes offer the highest level of exterior performance, with outstanding resistance to moisture, humidity, weathering, UV radiation, chemicals, chalking, gloss and color loss for approximately 10 years. This specification is indicated for architectural projects that require long-term cosmetic and functional protection from the elements. AAMA 2605 powder coating is often used for monuments and outdoor art installations.

Architects, specifiers and building owners should determine which AAMA performance specification is required, along with the desired finish color.

Our Architectural Powder Coating Process

Meets or Exceeds AAMA 2604 or 2605 Powder Coating Specifications

6-Stage Cleaning/Pre-Treatment

All organic or inorganic contaminants must be removed from the metal parts prior to powder coating. Our automated six stage pretreatment system is the best available, capable of removing even laser scale. Or, your project may call for a manual wash. The extra effort we put into this step pays off in terms of better coating adhesion, performance and corrosion protection.

After cleaning, the parts are thoroughly dried to remove any moisture prior to coating.

Coating/Finishing

Once the parts are clean and dry, it’s time for the coating booth. The powder coat particles are electrostatically charged onto the part surface to ensure even, durable coverage. Depending on the AAMA specification required and the coating selected, parts may require up to four coats. Many projects require two coats—a primer and a color coat. Others require a primer, color coat and topcoat.

For most architectural metal coating projects, we use our automated line, which allows for a high quantity/high mix focus with a consumer quality finish. It is capable of handling parts up to 600 lbs. and a maximum size of 120"L x 42"W x 84"H. A total of 18 automatic coating guns apply a consistent coating to meet AAMA 2604 or 2605 standards.

Curing

The coated parts head into an oven—we have a variety of standard and custom oven sizes to accommodate your project. They are heated to a designated temperature that turns the powder into a gel, and then to a complete cure. This generally takes 8 to 10 minutes at 330 to 460 degrees depending on the density of the parts and the thickness and color of the finish.

Pickup, Delivery or Shipping

You may pick up your finished parts at our facility. We also offer pickup and delivery service in a large area of Kansas and Oklahoma. Or, we can ship your finished parts to you or your customer.
